Fine jewelry already carries weight as a gift. Personalization changes the nature of it.
An unengraved pendant is a beautiful object that anyone could own. The same pendant carrying her initial, her children's names, or the date she got married is an object that only makes sense on her. It cannot be returned to a general population of wearers. That is the entire point.

Monogram
Two or three letters arranged as a single mark. A monogram reads as more traditional and more formal than a single initial, and it carries a family association that a lone letter does not. Name or word
The most direct and the most emotional. A name usually means a child, which is why nameplate necklaces are the single most common new mother and Mother's Day gift we make. A word instead of a name works when the recipient has one that means something to her. Both live in names and words.
Date
The quietest of the four. A date carries the same meaning as a name with none of the visibility, which makes it the right choice for someone private, or for a piece that will be worn in a professional setting every day.

Matching the piece to the occasion
New mother
A name in fine script, or a first initial. Keep it small and light. New mothers wear jewelry that survives being grabbed, so a low profile pendant on a short chain outperforms anything with edges or drop. Mommy and me pairs work well when there is an older sibling in the picture.
Milestone birthday
This is where solid gold and diamonds earn their place. A milestone gift is remembered by the material as much as the design, and it is the natural moment to move someone from silver or plated pieces into diamond accented solid gold.

The details people get wrong
Monogram letter order
The traditional arrangement is not alphabetical and not the same as her initials spoken aloud. A classic three letter monogram runs first name initial, then last name initial in the center, then middle or maiden name initial. The center letter is often the largest. Getting this wrong is the single most common personalization error, and because pieces are made to order, it is not correctable after production.
Before you submit. Write the three letters out in the order they will appear, read them back once, and confirm the middle letter is the surname. If she has a hyphenated or changed surname, ask someone who knows which version she uses.
Chain length
Sixteen inches sits at the base of the throat. Eighteen inches sits just below the collarbone and is the most versatile single length. Twenty inches and longer sit on the chest and layer under a shorter chain. If you are guessing, choose eighteen. If she wears a lot of crew necks, choose eighteen. If she is petite, sixteen reads better.
Spelling and characters
Confirm spelling from a written source, not memory. Names with silent letters, doubled letters, or regional spellings are where errors happen. Special characters and accents are not available on most designs, so plan around that rather than around it being fixed later.
Ring sizing
Personalized rings are sized at production. Borrowing a ring she already wears and having it measured is far more reliable than a printable chart, and it keeps the gift a surprise.
Made to order: how far ahead to buy
Nothing personalized ships from a shelf. Each piece is cast, finished, and personalized after the order is placed, which is why the work looks the way it does and why the timeline is different from ordinary retail.

One more consequence of made to order production: personalized and engraved pieces are generally not returnable unless they arrive damaged or there is a defect. This is standard across the industry and it is exactly why the spelling and monogram checks above matter.

Men wear personalized jewelry in narrower categories, which actually makes the choice easier. Signet rings, single initial pendants on heavier chains, and engraved bracelets cover most of the ground. Is solid gold worth it for a gift, or is plated fine?
It depends on how often the piece will be worn.
