Monogram necklace letter order is the single most common mistake we see, and on a cast metal pendant it is the one mistake that cannot be undone.
Most monogram etiquette online was written for stationery, towels, and embroidery, where a mistake costs a reprint. On a necklace the letters are cut or cast into solid metal after your order comes in. There is no unpicking it.
Jane Basch Designs has been making monogram jewelry since 1988. This guide covers every arrangement we are asked about, with worked examples, plus the constraints that apply to metal and not to fabric.
The one rule that trips everyone up
In a traditional three letter monogram, the surname initial goes in the middle, not at the end, and it is set larger than the two beside it.
This is not how you write your initials, and it is not alphabetical. It catches almost everyone.
Sarah Marie Bennett
S B MFirst name initial, surname initial enlarged in the center, middle name initial. Not SMB.
The reason is historical. Monograms were a mark of household and family, so the family name took the dominant position. The first and middle names flank it in support.
The shortcut to remember it. If the center letter is bigger, it is the surname. If all three letters are the same size, they run in normal reading order instead. Size and order are linked, and changing one changes the other.
Traditional three letter monogram
Order: first name initial, surname initial (enlarged, center), middle name initial.
Emily Grace Harper
E H GThomas Edward Reid
T R EThis is the arrangement most people mean when they say "a monogram," and it is what interlocking script designs are built around. The center letter is drawn larger and the flanking letters nest into it.
Modern three letter monogram
Order: first, middle, last, all the same size.
Emily Grace Harper
E G HReads exactly as the initials are normally written.
Equally correct, just a different convention. It reads as cleaner and more contemporary, and it suits block lettering where interlocking is not part of the design.
Choose one and be consistent. A set of pieces that mixes traditional and modern arrangements looks unconsidered.
Two letter monograms
Order: first name initial, then surname initial, both the same size.
Emily Harper
E HNo center enlargement, because there is no center. Two letter monograms are the right choice for anyone without a middle name, for anyone whose three initials spell something unfortunate, and for small pendants where three letters would be too crowded to read.
Single letter monograms
Traditionally, a single letter monogram is the surname initial, not the first name.
In practice, most single letter jewelry today uses the first name initial, and that is entirely accepted. The traditional rule is worth knowing so that you are choosing rather than defaulting.
Single letters are the most legible option at any size and the easiest to layer, which is why they are the most popular pieces in our initials collection.
A married woman's monogram
After marriage, the traditional arrangement keeps the three letter structure but swaps which names are used.
Order: first name initial, married surname initial (enlarged, center), maiden name initial.
Emily Harper, formerly Emily Grace Bennett, marrying into Harper
E H BThe maiden name takes the position the middle name held.
If she keeps her middle name instead of her maiden name, use the middle initial in that slot. Both are correct. The distinction is which name she wants carried forward.
If she has been married before, the convention is to build the new monogram from the first name, maiden name, and current married name, leaving the previous married name out.
A married couple's shared monogram
Order: one partner's first name initial, shared surname initial (enlarged, center), other partner's first name initial.
Emily and Thomas Harper
E H TThe long standing custom places the woman's initial on the left. Plenty of couples ignore that and either order is accepted, so decide between you and then keep it consistent across everything.
A couple's monogram is a joint mark rather than a personal one, which makes it more natural on something shared than on a necklace one person wears daily. For a wedding gift to one person, a single initial or that person's own monogram usually wears better.
Hyphenated and double surnames
Here the monogram grows to four letters, and both surname initials are enlarged.
Order: first name initial, first surname initial, second surname initial, middle name initial, with the two surname letters set larger.
Emily Grace Bennett-Harper
E B H GFour letters need noticeably more pendant width than three. On a small piece they stop being readable and start reading as texture, so this is a case where going up a size is not optional.
A two letter monogram of the two surname initials is a cleaner alternative when the piece has to stay small.
Same sex couples
The structure is identical. Shared surname enlarged in the center, each first name initial on either side.
Since the traditional ladies-first convention does not apply, the order is simply the couple's choice. Many pick whichever reads better aloud or looks better as a shape, which is a reasonable basis given that letterforms differ in how well they nest together.
Where each keeps their own surname, a four letter arrangement works: first initial, surname initial, surname initial, first initial, with the two surnames enlarged.
Men's monograms
The rules are the same. First, surname enlarged in center, middle.
What differs is convention of style rather than order. Men's monograms are more often block rather than script, and more often all one size in the modern arrangement. Signet rings in particular are usually engraved in block capitals of equal size.
Our men's collection is built around that heavier, squarer treatment.
Children and babies
Children follow the same rules as unmarried adults: first, surname enlarged in the center, middle.
Two practical notes. A child's full name often fits better than a monogram, because a name is immediately readable where three interlocked letters on a small pendant are not. And for mommy and me pairs, matching the arrangement across both pieces matters more than which arrangement you pick.
Why jewelry monograms follow different limits
This is the part the stationery guides leave out, and it is where orders actually go wrong.
Letters are cut from metal, not printed on a surface
An embroidered monogram can be unpicked and a printed one reprinted. A cast or cut monogram pendant is formed in metal after the order is placed. Arrangement is set at production and cannot be changed afterward, which is also why personalized pieces are generally not returnable except for damage or a defect.
Three interlocking letters need physical size
Script monograms work by nesting letters into each other. Below roughly three quarters of an inch, that nesting becomes visual noise rather than legible letters. A single initial stays readable at half that size.
If you want something small and delicate, a single initial or a two letter monogram will serve better than a shrunken three letter one.
Some letter combinations simply fit better
Round letters like O, C, G, and S nest cleanly. Letters with long diagonals and tails like K, X, W, and Q crowd their neighbors. A monogram is a drawn shape, not just three characters in a row, so some combinations need more width than others to breathe.
Script and block behave differently
Script suits the traditional enlarged-center arrangement, because the flourishes of the center letter wrap the two beside it. Block suits the modern equal-size arrangement, because square letterforms do not nest and look better evenly spaced. Pairing script with equal sizing, or block with an enlarged center, usually looks like a mistake even when the order is correct.
Chain length follows pendant size
A larger monogram wants to sit lower so it has room. Eighteen inches suits most monogram pendants, with sixteen for smaller pieces on petite frames. Our guide to layering necklaces covers where each length lands.
The check to run before you order
Sixty seconds that prevent the most expensive mistake
- Write the three letters in the exact order they will appear on the piece.
- Confirm the center letter is the surname, if the center letter is enlarged.
- Confirm spellings from something written down, not from memory. Doubled and silent letters are where errors live.
- For a married woman, confirm which surname she uses now and whether she wants her maiden initial or her middle initial.
- Read the three letters aloud and check they do not spell something unintended.
- Check the pendant size against the number of letters. Four letters need more width than three.
That last point about unintended words is worth its own sentence. It is a real consideration with three letter monograms and the reason a number of people choose a two letter arrangement instead.
Frequently asked questions
What order do monogram initials go in?
In a traditional three letter monogram the order is first name initial, surname initial, middle name initial, with the surname in the center and set larger. Sarah Marie Bennett would be S B M, with the B enlarged. In a modern monogram all three letters are the same size and run in normal reading order, so the same name would be S M B.
Does the last initial go in the middle of a monogram?
Yes, in the traditional arrangement, and it is set larger than the letters beside it. This is the detail most people get wrong because it is not how initials are normally written. If all three letters are the same size, the surname goes last instead. Size and order are linked.
What is the monogram order for a married woman?
First name initial, married surname initial enlarged in the center, then maiden name initial. Emily Bennett marrying into Harper becomes E H B. If she prefers to keep her middle initial rather than her maiden initial, use the middle name in that position instead. Both are correct.
How do you monogram a married couple's initials?
One partner's first name initial, the shared surname initial enlarged in the center, then the other partner's first name initial. Emily and Thomas Harper becomes E H T. Tradition places the woman's initial on the left, but either order is accepted as long as it stays consistent.
What is the difference between a traditional and a modern monogram?
A traditional monogram enlarges the surname initial and places it in the center, flanked by the first and middle initials. A modern monogram uses the same size for all three letters in first, middle, last order. Traditional suits interlocking script designs, modern suits block lettering.
How do you monogram a hyphenated last name?
Use four letters: first name initial, both surname initials enlarged in the center, then the middle name initial. Emily Grace Bennett-Harper becomes E B H G with the B and H larger. Four letters need noticeably more pendant width than three, so size up or use a two letter arrangement of the surname initials instead.
What order are the letters in a two letter monogram?
First name initial then surname initial, both the same size, with no center enlargement. Two letter monograms suit anyone without a middle name, anyone whose three initials spell something unfortunate, and smaller pendants where three interlocking letters would be too crowded to read.
Can a monogram be changed after the necklace is made?
No. Monogram pendants are cast or cut from metal after the order is placed, so the arrangement is fixed at production. This is also why personalized pieces are generally not returnable except for damage or a manufacturing defect. Check the letter order and spelling before submitting.
How big does a monogram necklace need to be?
A three letter script monogram generally needs at least about three quarters of an inch to stay legible, since the letters interlock and lose definition below that. Four letter monograms need more. A single initial reads clearly at roughly half that size, which makes it the better choice for small or layered pieces.
Should a single letter monogram be the first or last initial?
Traditionally the surname initial. In practice most single letter jewelry today uses the first name initial and that is entirely accepted. Knowing the traditional rule means you are choosing deliberately rather than by default.
Does script or block lettering work better for a monogram?
Script suits the traditional arrangement with an enlarged center letter, because the flourishes wrap the flanking letters. Block suits the modern arrangement with equal sized letters, because square forms do not nest and look better evenly spaced. Mixing the two conventions usually reads as a mistake even when the order is right.
